CONOR McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather is ON, with a date, venue and fight rules named, plus confirmation from both fighters on social media and multiple US media reports.

August 26 (August 27 AEST) is the date, while T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas will be the venue.

McGregor’s social media post amounted to the first post-announcement swipe from either fighter - it pictures Floyd Mayweather Senior rather than the champion ‘Money’.

The fight will be boxing rules, 12 three-minute rounds at 154 pounds with 10-ounce gloves, sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Mayweather Promotions will be the lead promoter for the entirely boxing card, and TV network Showtime will air the megafight on pay-per-view.

It also gives Mayweather (49-0) the chance to reach 50 professional wins unbeaten. It is McGregor’s first boxing match (21-3 MMA).

McGregor, who negotiated in conjunction with the UFC, is in line for easily the biggest payday of his career while Mayweather will bank another monster earn in a blockbuster expected to reap hundreds of millions of dollars. Mayweather wanted no less than $100 million, while McGregor will also take a massive slice but will also be making money for the UFC.

UFC president Dana White, who made the bout in negotiations with McGregor, Mayweather and ‘Money’s’ long-time adivser Al Haymon, said the deal went smoothly despite being touted as a nightmare.

“Negotiations went smooth, Floyd is surrounded by some smart people and we got this thing done. The impossible deal is now done,” White told ESPN’s SportsCenter.

“It will be in a ring, it’s a boxing event. Mayweather Promotions will build the undercard for it.

“Conor McGregor is a guy who’s done a lot of good things over here [UFC], for the sport and for this company. He wanted this and obviously the fans wanted it too.

“Not only for him - at the end of the day, my job is to make fights that the fans want to see.”

White said McGregor would not be totally outmatched by Mayweather, despite having never fought in a professional boxing match.

“I talked to Conor McGregor this morning ... he is absolutely 100 per cent positive that he wins this fight,” White said. “I stopped doubting Conor McGregor a long time ago.

“When two men step into any [arena], whether it’s the ring, the Octagon, whatever it is, anything is possible. Floyd Mayweather’s 40 years-old, he’s always had problems with southpaws. Conor McGregor is 27 years-old [28], he is a southpaw and whenever Conor hits people, they fall.

“I’m not saying that Conor McGregor’s gonna win, I’m not saying that Floyd Mayweather’s gonna win, but I’m telling you this: The reason Conor McGregor’s as big as he is is because he’ll fight anybody, anywhere, any time. He will go after Floyd Mayweather and he will try to knock him out.”

McGregor is also bullish about his chances of springing an upset, though he is a massive outside against a boxing legend barely troubled during his unbeaten career.

“No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming. Trust me on that!,” McGregor said back in March. “When I step in there, I’ll shock the whole f***ing world. Trust me on that. Look me in the eyes. 28 years of age... Long, rangy, dangerous with every hand.

“Trust me, I’m going to stop Floyd. You’re all going to eat your words. The whole world is going to eat their words.”

It will be Mayweather’s first fight in two years, since his decision win over Andre Berto. He is 40 years-old to McGregor’s 28. The Irish megastar last fought at UFC 205 last November, the historic show at New York’s Madison Square Garden in which he knocked out lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez to become the promotion’s first concurrent two-division champion.

Money is already flowing for the long-hyped bout. Aussie bookmaker sportsbet.com.au reports that McGregor is the fancy of punters despite being at long odds.

Sportsbet.com.au says McGregor is attracting 10 times the money of Mayweather, though ‘Money’ is a $1.15 favourite to $5.50 for ‘The Notorious’.

Mayweather winning by KO/TKO is favourite in the method of victory market.

“This is the biggest fight in history with the two superstars of both sports finally settling their scores in the ring. Mayweather has the obvious advantage and is the rightful favourite in our eyes but the punters are predicting notorious Conor McGregor is going to shock the world once again,’’ said sportsbet.com.au’s Will Byrne.
